A former member of the National Assembly, Honourable Oluyemi Aladejebi has advised every meaningful Nigerian to put more pressure on the National Assembly to create an enabling law that will enhance quick implementation of State Police as a panacea to the insecurity in the country.
Hon Aladejebi said this is necessary in the interest of Nigeria and the innocent people being killed on daily basis in the country. The ex lawmaker said he has made a lot of statements on the issue of State Police in which the President, His Excellency, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu as early as February, appealed to the National Assembly to urgently take steps on the amendment of the constitution as regards State Police Creation in Nigeria.
The former lawmaker stated further that the creation of state police will no doubt assist in reducing the problem of insecurity in most States in Nigeria like the endless killing in Plateau, Zamfara, Kogi, Benue and recent kidnappings in Ekiti and Ondo States.
He affirmed further that, State policing will go a long way to curb incessant menace and crimes in the country, but lamented that unfortunately, the National Assembly is yet to do the needful considering the urgency and necessity of the law at this time in the country.
He said his fear is that, once the 10th National Assembly fails to enact that law, the 11th National Assembly will have to start all over again which according to the former lawmaker, will be like a motion without movement.
Aladejebi therefore advised the National Assembly to try as much as possible to act fast to enable the States to put in place this much desire state police. He stated further that he had advocated earlier that the key to amend the constitution as regards State Police Creation can be taken out of the total package of amendment in the National Assembly because the issue is a matter of security, lives and properties which is a big problem that up till now, nothing concrete has been done.
“Armies, we hear the Inspector General of Police setting up one committee or the other on State Police, without the necessary action by the National Assembly, any step taking will be a barren exercise. The best thing is for the National Assembly to do its work and quickly too,” he said.
