Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, transport unions in Ekiti State have assured the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and residents of the state of their readiness to ensure the smooth movement of election personnel and materials, while pledging to maintain peace throughout the exercise.
The assurance came during a media visit to the leadership of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) as preparations intensify for the election.
Speaking on behalf of the RTEAN chairman, the union Secretary, Hon. Dare Bukola Ibitoye said the association had endorsed Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji based on his performance in office and his efforts to unite transport unions in the state.
Adeola said Governor Oyebanji had strengthened harmony among transport operators by resolving long-standing disputes and fostering cooperation between all the different transport unions and motorcycle operators across Ekiti State.
According to him, the state currently enjoys peace and stability because the governor has created an atmosphere of unity among transport stakeholders, unlike in previous years when disagreements were common.
Speaking on preparations for the election, ibitoye said all vehicles to be deployed for election duties have been duly registered with INEC and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). He disclosed that operations would commence on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s poll.
He further revealed that 32 vehicles have been registered for election duties across the local government areas, while drivers would undergo training before deployment. He warned that anyone who attempts to disrupt the election would be held accountable for his or her actions.
Adeola also dismissed reports that opposition parties were unable to mobilise supporters because of shortage of buses, describing the claim as false. He explained that many transport operators depend on their daily activities to meet financial obligations therefore have sole responsibility to decide when their vehicles will be in operation and continue their legitimate businesses.
Also speaking, the Ekiti State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Ambassador Joseph Falope, expressed confidence that the election would be peaceful. He said transport workers would assist in distributing sensitive election materials from the Central Bank of Nigeria to designated locations across the state, adding that all efforts are geared towards ensuring a credible and successful electoral process.
