Tinubu to Afenifere: ‘I Ran for This Office to Serve Nigeria’s Interests, Not to Plunder’

President Bola Tinubu has vowed to reform Nigeria for better performance and to promote justice and equality in every aspect of the nation’s life.

He made this vow on Wednesday when he met with Afenifere leaders at the home of Pa Reuben Fasoranti in Akure, Ondo State. He said he was determined to lead Nigeria to economic and social prosperity.

”Nigeria will overcome the current economic difficulties. There is hope ahead. I asked for this job, and I do not regret it. I am fully accountable.

‘‘We are fulfilling our obligations to the international community. We have not failed to pay our lenders, and we will not fail. We are steering Nigeria to a prosperous future,’’ the President said.

President Tinubu said his goal was to ensure fiscal and true federalism and to uphold the principle of “fair play for all.”

He thanked all Nigerians for their support and patience in the face of the hard but temporary economic situation, promising them that their endurance and persistence would pay off.

“I am not new to the economic challenges we have faced since I took office. As the former governor of Lagos State, I also faced similar pressure to resign. But, I persisted, and Lagos became the fifth-largest economy in Africa. We have to handle this situation with prudence and grow Nigeria sensibly.

“I ran for this office to serve Nigeria’s interests, and I was elected. Some said I would not survive the tribunal and made all kinds of predictions, but even in court, I stayed focused.

“We will not let Nigeria’s economy be abused. We will not leave our economy to plunderers. I am resolved to restructure our finances and stop selfish interests for good,” he said.

Pa Olu Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who read Pa Fasoranti’s speech, praised President Tinubu for his dedication to Nigeria’s progress and backed his administration’s initiatives.
